Authorization errors in Adobe Digital Editions

You may see one of the authorization errors listed below when you're trying to open an ebook in Adobe Digital Editions (ADE).

  • E_STREAM_ERROR
  • E_ADEPT_DOCUMENT_TOO_SHORT
  • E_AUTH_NOT_READY
  • E_AUTH_BAD_DEVICE_KEY_OR_PKCS12
  • E_ACT_NOT_READY
  • Error! Check Activation
  • "You can only authorize this computer with an Adobe ID that hasn't previously been used to authorize any other computer or mobile devices. Please try again."

You can typically resolve these errors by deauthorizing and reauthorizing ADE on your computer.

Important: Adobe IDs are no longer supported in ADE. If you originally used an Adobe ID to authorize ADE, you'll need to use a ByteBooks ID instead when reauthorizing. To retain access to ebooks that you downloaded with your Adobe ID, create your ByteBooks ID using the same email address that you used for your Adobe ID.
