"Error 2038" or "E_IO_WRITE" message when transferring titles to a NOOK

These errors usually occur when you're running out of space on your NOOK. The full message will look something like this:

  • Error 2038 - Unsupported file type
  • E_IO_WRITE Failed to write destination file

You can check how much space you have left using the steps below. If you find your storage is low, try deleting some of your titles before transferring again.

If it looks like you've got enough storage space but you're still having trouble transferring, contact your library for more help.

Windows computers

  1. Make sure your NOOK is plugged into your computer.
  2. Open your File Explorer.
  3. Right-click on your NOOK under "This PC," then select Properties.

Mac computers

  1. Make sure your NOOK is plugged into your computer.
  2. Open "Finder."
  3. Control-click on your NOOK under "Devices," then select Get Info.
Look for the "Available" space left on the NOOK. You can compare this number to the "Capacity," or total amount of space on the device.
