How to set OverDrive for Windows (desktop) to open audiobooks automatically

Sometimes a "file association" error occurs on your computer, which prevents OverDrive for Windows (desktop) from opening downloaded audiobooks. If you're having trouble opening audiobooks in OverDrive for Windows (desktop), try the steps below to make sure that your computer opens ODM files (which are used to download audiobooks) in OverDrive's desktop app.

Windows 7

1. Click Start and type "Default Programs" into the search box. Press Enter.
2. Click Associate a file type or protocol with a program.
3. Scroll down and select the ODM file type.
   
4. The extension should be set to "OverDrive for Windows" under "Current Default." If this is not the case, click Change program . . .
5. Select OverDrive for Windows from the list of recommended programs. If it's not listed there, continue to step 6. Otherwise, skip to step 7.
6. Click the Browse button, select MediaConsole from one of the locations listed at the end of this step, and click Open.
   Default locations:
   • 64-bit systems:C:\Program Files (x86)\OverDrive for Windows
   • 32-bit systems:C:\Program Files\OverDrive for Windows
   Note: You can find your system type by searching for System on your computer, then selecting the System option under "Control Panel."
7. Click OK, then close to save the changes.
8. Try downloading the title again.

Windows 8

1. Use the Search charm to search for "Default Programs."
2. Click Associate a file type or protocol with a program.
3. Scroll down and select the ODM file type.
   
4. The extension should be set to "OverDrive for Windows" under "Current Default." If this is not the case, click Change program . . .
5. Select OverDrive for Windows from the list of recommended programs. If it's not listed there, continue to step 6. Otherwise, skip to step 7.
6. Select More options (or More apps), scroll to the bottom of the list, and select Look for another app on this PC. Then, select MediaConsole.exe from one of the locations below.
   Default locations:
   • 64-bit systems: C:\Program Files (x86)\OverDrive for Windows
   • 32-bit systems: C:\Program Files\OverDrive for Windows
   Note: You can find your system type by searching for System on your computer, then selecting the System option under "Control Panel."
7. Click OK, then close to save the changes.
8. Try downloading the title again.

Windows 10

1. Click at the bottom of the screen, type "Default apps," and select Default apps.
2. Click Choose default apps by file type.
3. Scroll down to the ODM file type.
   
4. The extension should be set to "OverDrive for Windows." If it's set to a different app, click on the app to view other options.
5. Select OverDrive for Windows from the list of recommended programs. If it's not listed there, you'll need to contact Microsoft Support.
6. Try downloading the title again.
