You can use the OverDrive app to quickly find and get eBooks, audiobooks, and streaming videos from your library or school on your Chromebook.

If you don't want to install an app, you can read eBooks and listen to audiobooks in your Chrome web browser instead. Visit these help articles to learn more: Getting started with OverDrive Read and Getting started with OverDrive Listen.

How to borrow and enjoy titles in the OverDrive app

  1. Install the OverDrive app from the Chrome Web Store or Google Play. The first time you open the app, you'll be prompted to sign in.
    Note: If you're under 13, you may have multiple sign-in options. Learn which under-13 option is right for you here.
  2. Add your library or school to the app and open its digital collection.
  3. Find an available title in your library or school's collection and select Borrow.
    Or, click or tap the title's jacket to open its details page (where you can read a description, choose a lending period that's different from your default lending period, borrow the title, and more).

  4. To see all your options for borrowed titles, select books icon to go to your Loans page. From there, you can:
    • Download EPUB eBooks to your app Bookshelf. Or, you may be able to choose Kindle Book (U.S. only) to go to Amazon's website and send the book to your Kindle or Kindle reading app.

    • Download audiobooks to your app Bookshelf.

    • Some eBooks, like read-alongs, can only be read in your web browser. For these titles, tap Read in browser to be taken out of the app and into your Chrome browser to read them. These books are not added to your Bookshelf in the OverDrive app.

How to borrow and enjoy titles in the OverDrive app

  1. Install the OverDrive app from the Chrome Web Store or Google Play. The first time you open the app, you'll be prompted to sign in.

  2. Add your library or school to the app and open its digital collection.
  3. In your school or library's digital collection, look for an available title. You can:
    • Browse the titles on the home page.
    • Use the menu at the top of the page to browse categories.
    • Run a search.
  4. When you find a title that looks interesting, click or tap on it, then select Borrow.

    Or, select more to view the title's details page. From here, select Borrow.

  5. Find titles you've borrowed on your Checkouts page (under your Account). From here, you can:
    • App only (not in the browser): Select Download or Add to app to download an eBook or audiobook to your bookshelf in the OverDrive app. If there are multiple download formats available, select one, then tap the Confirm link. You can only choose one downloadable format for each title.

    • Select Read to open an eBook in a new tab in your Chrome web browser, without downloading it to the OverDrive app. To learn about reading eBooks in your browser, visit our help articles about OverDrive Read or MediaDo Reader.

    • Select Download, then Get Kindle Book (U.S. libraries only) to complete checkout on Amazon's website and send the title to your Kindle or Kindle reading app.
