You can borrow eBooks from your library and transfer them to compatible eReaders using free Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) software on your Windows or Mac computer.

Watch our eReaders video or follow our step-by-step instructions below to get started.

Device notes:

How to get started

Note: Your library’s website may look slightly different from the one in this video. Please use the written steps below for exact instructions for your library.

Step 1

Install and authorize Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) on your computer.
Note: These instructions are for ADE 2.0 or newer. We recommend always installing and using the latest version of ADE.

Step 2

Connect your eReader to your computer.

Step 3

On your computer, open your library's digital collection (find it using www.overdrive.com) and borrow an eBook.

Now, choose the image below that looks like the titles in your library's collection.

Step 4

After you borrow an eBook, select books icon to go to your Loans page. From there, use the Download button to select a downloadable format (for the best experience, we recommend EPUB eBook or Open EPUB eBook, though many eReaders also support PDF eBook and Open PDF eBook).

If prompted, authorize ADE with a free Adobe ID or an OverDrive account (this is required for downloading Adobe [DRM-protected] eBooks).

Downloaded eBooks open in ADE.

Step 5

To transfer an eBook to your eReader, open the "Library View" in ADE (click the Library button in the top-left corner, if needed). From there, drag and drop the eBook into your eReader, which should appear on the left under "Devices."

Once you've transferred a library eBook, you can read it on your device just like any other eBook.

Notes:

  • During the transfer process, your eReader will be automatically authorized with the same Adobe ID or OverDrive account you used on your computer.
  • If you're using a Sony Reader and it isn't recognized by ADE, you may need to install and use the Sony Reader software to transfer eBooks.

Step 4

Borrowed eBooks appear on your Checkouts page (under your Account). From there, use the Download drop-down menu to select a format for each eBook (for the best experience, we recommend Adobe EPUB or Open EPUB, though many eReaders also support Adobe PDF and Open PDF), then select Confirm & Download.
