You can borrow eBooks from your library and transfer them to compatible eReaders using free Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) software on your Windows or Mac computer.

Device notes:

How to get started

Step 1

Install and authorize Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) on your computer.
Note: These instructions are for ADE 2.0 or newer. We recommend always installing and using the latest version of ADE.

Step 2

Connect your eReader to your computer.

Step 3

On your computer, open your library's digital collection (find it using www.overdrive.com).

Now, choose the image below that looks like the titles in your library's collection.

Step 4

Borrow an eBook (you'll need to sign into your library to complete this step).

Step 5

Click the Download button for the borrowed eBook.

If prompted, authorize ADE with a free Adobe ID or an OverDrive account (this is required for downloading Adobe [DRM-protected] eBooks).

Downloaded eBooks open in ADE.

Step 6

To transfer an eBook to your eReader, open the "Library View" in ADE (click the Library button in the top-left corner, if needed). From there, drag and drop the eBook into your eReader, which should appear on the left under "Devices." You may need to accept a file-transfer prompt on your eReader in order for it to appear in ADE.

Once you've transferred a library eBook, you can read it on your device just like any other eBook.

Notes:

  • During the transfer process, your eReader will be automatically authorized with the same Adobe ID or OverDrive account you used on your computer.
  • If you're using a Sony Reader and it isn't recognized by ADE, you may need to install and use the Sony Reader software to transfer eBooks.
