You can download an OverDrive Read eBook in your web browser so you can read it later offline (without an internet connection).

If you make notes and highlights when you're reading offline, they should save and sync once you connect to the internet again on that device.

Notes:

  • Some eBooks (especially those with pictures) are too large to completely download in your browser. In those cases, you'll only be able to save a portion of the book for offline reading.
  • Narration for read-along eBooks always requires an internet connection.
  • LexisNexis users will not see an "Offline Reading" option for their OverDrive Read eBooks. Instead, those users should download the eBook in the OverDrive app if they want to read offline.

How to save an eBook for offline reading:

  1. Open the OverDrive Read menu.

(On a mobile device, tap the middle of the screen to bring up the menu icon.)
  2. Select Offline Access.
  3. Select Start Download to download the book for offline reading.
  4. Save the URL (address) for the OverDrive Read eBook you downloaded. We recommend bookmarking it in your browser.

Once you're offline, you'll need to open your web browser and go to the book's URL (or open the bookmark) to keep reading.

How to remove a downloaded OverDrive Read eBook

If you need to save some space on your device, you can remove downloaded eBooks from your browser's cache. Follow the steps below to remove a downloaded eBook.

Note: If you clear your browser's cache completely, you'll also remove all OverDrive Read eBooks you've downloaded.

  1. Open the eBook you'd like to delete.
  2. Open the OverDrive Read menu.

(On a mobile device, tap the middle of the screen to bring up the menu icon.)
  3. Select Offline Access.
  4. Select Delete, then confirm by selecting Yes.

There's no limit to the number of times you can download an OverDrive Read eBook, so if you delete it from your browser, you can download it again whenever you want during the lending period.
