This error typically occurs when you're trying to download an eBook from your library using OverDrive's app on your mobile device and the date or time is incorrect.

The full error will read something like one of these:

  • Error message ASC4 license adobe request. Error 2004 1301168980000 is before 2011-3-26T-12-31-0700.
  • Adobe Activation Request Error: 2004 Adobe request error: E_ADEPT_REQUEST EXPIRED-2011-07-24T14:46:17=07:00(1311543977000) is before 2011-07-25T14:16;06-07;00 (1311628566827)
  • ACSM file has expired

To correct the error, please check the date, time, and time zone settings for your device to ensure that they are all correct.

Note: Make sure you've updated the OverDrive app to the latest version before trying the steps below.

For Android devices

  1. From your System Settings, select Date & time.
  2. If the Automatic setting isn't working for you, please try setting the date and time manually.
  3. Double-check that the time zone is correct.
  4. Power your device off, wait a few seconds, then turn it back on and try downloading the title again.

For iOS devices

  1. From your home screen, go to Settings > General > Date & Time.
  2. Turn "24-Hour Time" ON.
  3. Delete app cookies.
    • Open the Home menu.
    • Tap Settings, and scroll to the bottom of the panel.
    • Select Delete app cookies, and tap to confirm.
  4. Clear your browser cache.
  5. Power your device off, wait a few seconds, then turn it back on and try downloading the title again.

For Windows 8 and RT devices

  1. Go into Desktop mode (tap the tile, or press Ctrl + D).
  2. Tap or click the clock in the lower-right corner.
  3. Select Change date and time settings...
  4. If the displayed date and time are incorrect, select Change date and time... in the "Date and Time" window, then set to appropriate values.
    You can also try clicking the Internet Time tab, selecting Change Settings, then Update now.
  5. Once the date and time are correct, restart your device, then try downloading the title again.

For Windows Phone 8 devices

  1. From the Settings menu, select Date+time under System.
  2. If the date and time are currently set to Automatic, try setting them manually.
    The manual options will appear once you've turned off the automatic setting.
  3. Once the date and time are correct, power your device off, wait a few seconds, then turn it back on and try downloading the title again.
