You can use the steps below to look up words or phrases in the dictionary using the OverDrive app or OverDrive Read. If you're using the OverDrive app, you may also be able to search Wikipedia or Google.

In the OverDrive app for Android or Chromebook

Open an eBook from your app Bookshelf.

On Android 4 and 5 or Chromebook: To look a word up in the dictionary, click or tap and hold it, then select the magnifying glass. You can also edit the dictionary pop-up to define a different word or phrase.

On Android 6 and 7: To look a word up in the dictionary, tap and hold it, then tap Define.

You can also install and use certain offline dictionaries to look up words in the app.

In the OverDrive app for iOS (iPhone/iPad/iPod touch)

Open an eBook from your app Bookshelf. To look up a word in the dictionary, tap and hold it, then tap Look Up.

Define option for a selected word in iOS. See instructions above.

You can also install language dictionaries to use in the app.

After you define a word, tap Search web to search for the word or phrase on Google (or another search engine).

In the OverDrive app for Windows 8/10

Open an eBook from your app Bookshelf. Then, tap and hold a word to open the dictionary.

You can edit the field in the dictionary pop-up to search for different words or whole phrases in the dictionary, Wikipedia, or Google.

In OverDrive Read

In an OverDrive Read eBook, click (or tap) and hold a word until the highlighter pops up. Then, select Define to look the highlighted word up in the dictionary.
