You need a library card to borrow anything from your library, including materials from your library's digital collection.

Note: Even if you sign into your library's digital collection using an OverDrive account (or Facebook), you'll need to save a library card to your OverDrive account to borrow digital materials. Learn more about the differences between your library card and an OverDrive account here.

How to sign up for a library card

Libraries handle the sign-up process for library cards in different ways. Use these steps to find out how to sign up for a card from your library:

  1. Visit your library's digital collection (find it at overdrive.com).
  2. Select the "Need a library card?" link in the footer.
  3. If prompted, select your library or branch from the drop-down menu.
  4. A button will appear that either links directly to your library's card requirements (some libraries even offer online card sign-ups) or connects you to your library so you can contact them about getting a library card.

Some tips for getting your library card

Libraries handle the sign-up process for library cards in different ways.

To find out what you need to get a library card from your library, we recommend that you turn to Google (or your preferred search engine) for answers. You can run a search that looks like this:

get library card, Your_Library_Name_Here

In the results, you should see a link to your library's specific instructions on how to get a card, including the requirements and what you need to do to prove you live in the community.

Note: Your library may not list its library card requirements online. If you can't find them using an online search engine, then it's probably best to visit your local branch with the items below.

To get your library card, you may be asked for one or more of these:

  • A valid ID with your name and current address
  • A bill or some other official piece of mail that was sent to you with your current address on it
  • A library card application

Some libraries will let you register for a card online, so you may want to check their website before making the trip to your local branch.
