Amazon's Kindle Fire tablets (the Kindle Fire, Fire HD, and Fire HDX) are compatible with Kindle Books (available to U.S. libraries only), but they offer more sophisticated web browsing capabilities than Kindle eReaders and can install the original OverDrive app (available worldwide). Kindle Fire tablets are based on the Android operating system, so many of our Android help articles are also useful for Kindle Fire tablets.

We have a separate device profile for Kindle eReaders (like the original Kindle or the Kindle Paperwhite).

You can read more about Kindle Fire tablets on Amazon's website.

  • OverDrive for Android (for borrowing and enjoying eBooks, audiobooks, and streaming videos)
Note: The OverDrive app is available for 2nd generation Kindle Fires and newer.

Compatible formats

  • All eBook formats except PDF
  • All audiobook formats
  • Streaming videos (require the OverDrive app)
Note: Some videos, like those from Starz, cannot be played on Kindle Fire or Fire HD tablets.
