How should I sign into the OverDrive app if I'm under 13?

The OverDrive app has limited availability. If you can't use the OverDrive app, we encourage you to try our newer reading app, Libby. Get started with Libby on Android, iOS, Fire tablets, or in your browser.

Users under age 13 have two options for signing into the OverDrive app: the under-13 option and the library card option (available for most libraries).

Both options allow users under 13 to use the OverDrive app without submitting personal information, in full compliance with the Children's Online Privacy Policy Act (COPPA).

Learn more about the under-13 option

You'll see the under-13 link at the bottom of the screen when the app launches for the first time.

Here are some limitations of the under-13 option:

  • If you download an ebook, you won't be able to download it on other devices.
  • If you need to reinstall the app, you won't be able to re-download currently downloaded ebooks (unless you check them out again).

If you want to download the same ebooks on other devices, sign into the OverDrive app using a library card (if available) or have a parent or guardian create an OverDrive account that you can use to sign in.

Learn more about the library card option

The library card option is available for most libraries, and we're working to add more. Whenever possible, users under 13 should use the library card option since it comes with added benefits, like the ability to download the same ebooks on multiple devices. You can also use your library card to sign into your library's OverDrive website and overdrive.com.

See this help article to learn how to sign into the OverDrive app with your library card.
