What to do if a title is not properly loading or the OverDrive app is crashing

If the OverDrive app is not working properly (titles are not loading properly, the app crashes, etc.), here are some troubleshooting options that should help.

Troubleshooting the OverDrive app on an iOS device (iPhone/iPad/iPod touch)

Please try these steps in order. Once your issue is resolved, there's no need to continue on to the next step.

  1. Make sure the OverDrive app is closed, along with any other unnecessary apps.
    • Double-click the Home button to open your "recents list."
    • Swipe up on the OverDrive app to close it. Or, if you're not using iOS 7, tap and hold the OverDrive icon until it begins to shake. Tap the red minus sign to close it.
    • Close any other unneeded apps.
    • Press the Home button to exit your "recents list."
    • Open the OverDrive app and check the "Bookshelf." If titles are missing, try downloading them again.
    • Continue to step 2 if the app is still misbehaving.
  2. Restart your device.
    • Hold down the Power button until the red "slide to power off" slider appears.
    • Power your device off.
    • Hold down the Power button until your screen lights up.
    • Open the OverDrive app and check the "Bookshelf." If titles are missing, try downloading them again.
    • Continue to step 3 if the app is still misbehaving.
  3. Reauthorize your device.
    • Tap Settings from the Home menu. If you're using an older version of our app, you'll find settings under Get Books+.
    • Tap Deauthorize.
    • Tap Authorize, then sign back in with your Adobe ID.
    • If this doesn't resolve your issue, please continue to step 4.
  4. Uninstall then reinstall the OverDrive app.
    This will clear your bookshelf, history, and app settings. You can save the list of titles in your history by going to Home Menu > History > Edit. Tap Select All, then Share. From there, you can email the list wherever you like.
    Note: If you're using a 1st generation iPhone or iPod touch, please back up OverDrive Media Console (OMC) to iTunes before uninstalling. OMC is no longer available for your device from the App Store.
    • Tap and hold the OverDrive icon until it begins to shake.
    • Tap the "X" on the icon.
    • Tap Delete to remove the app.
    • Tap the Home button to return to your home screen.
    • Install the OverDrive app from the App Store and try downloading the titles again.
    • Log into your OverDrive account (optional) and reauthorize your device.
      Note: To download EPUB titles, please reauthorize your device. To download previously downloaded titles, please be sure to use the same Adobe ID you used previously.

Troubleshooting OverDrive's mobile app on an Android device

Please try these steps in order. Once your issue is resolved, there's no need to continue on to the next step.

  1. Make sure the OverDrive app is closed.
    • Go to Menu > Settings > Applications > Manage applications.
    • Find OverDrive Media Console in the list then tap it.
    • Tap Force stop if it's available.
    • Open the OverDrive app and check the "Bookshelf." If titles are missing, try downloading them again.
    • Continue to step 2 if the app is still misbehaving.
  2. Restart your device.
    • Hold down the Power button until a menu of options appears.
    • Tap Power Off then OK to turn off your device.
    • Hold down the Power button until your screen lights up to turn it back on.
    • Open the OverDrive app and check the "Bookshelf." If titles are missing, try downloading them again.
    • Continue to step 3 if the app is still misbehaving.
  3. Uninstall then reinstall the OverDrive app.
    This will clear your bookshelf, history, and app settings. You can save the list of titles in your history by going to Home Menu > History, then tap Share All. From there, you can send the list wherever you like.

Restart your device.

  • Power your phone off by holding down the Power button until "Goodbye" appears.
  • Hold down the Power button until your screen lights up.
  • Open OverDrive's mobile app and check the "Bookshelf." If you're still having trouble with a title, try deleting it then downloading it again.

Troubleshooting the OverDrive app on Windows 8 and RT

Please try these next steps in order. Once your issue is resolved, there's no need to continue on to the next step.

  1. Make sure the OverDrive app is closed.
    • Fully close the OverDrive app by swiping down from the top bezel and dragging the app down to the bottom of the screen.
    • Open the OverDrive app and check the "Bookshelf." If titles are missing, try downloading them again.
    • Continue to step 2 if the app is still misbehaving.
  2. Restart your device.
    • Open your charms bar (swipe away from the right edge of the screen, or press Windows key + C)
    • Select Settings, then Power. Select Shut Down.
    • Wait for at least 10 seconds after your device shuts down, then turn it back on.
    • Continue to step 3 if the app is still misbehaving.
  3. Uninstall the OverDrive app.
  4. Install the OverDrive app from the Windows Store and try downloading the titles again.

If you use an OverDrive account, please sign back in from the Settings menu, so you can sync your progress and bookmarks.

Note: To download EPUB titles, please reauthorize your device. To download previously downloaded titles, please be sure to use the same Adobe ID you used previously.

Troubleshooting OverDrive Read eBooks on a mobile device

Please try these steps in order. Once your issue is resolved, there's no need to continue on to the next step.

  1. If you're trying to load a title using our app, please try closing it and using your device's browser instead.
  2. If you're trying to load a title using your device's mobile browser, please try closing it and use the browser in the OverDrive app instead.
  3. If you're still having trouble, please restart your device and try again.
